All about mangolime nappies

We think our nappies are the bee's knees! They are trim fitting, they are effective, they are made of high quality materials, they look gorgeous, and every time you use them you are doing something good for the earth.

The mangolime nappy is based on the tried and tested Hippy Hippy Snap pattern, with a modified tummy scoop to give your baby freedom of movement. The legs and back are elasticised to contain leakage and ensure a comfortable fit.

mangolime nappies are what's known as All-in-Two nappies (or AI2s). This means that there are two parts to the nappy, the outer waterproof shell and the snap in absorbent booster. When snapped together, you have everything you need. No need to buy waterproof covers or additional boosters. The beauty of AI2 nappies is that they are fast drying, and you can reuse the unsoiled outer shell by just snapping in a new booster.

What are mangolime nappies made of?

The shell of mangolime nappies is made from an outer layer of 100% cotton (designer prints), a hidden breathable waterproof layer of 2 mil PUL (polyurethane laminate), and a stay dry inner of supersoft high quality microchamois, microfleece or suedecloth. The nappy does up with adjustable coordinating resin snaps at the waist and legs. The top snap on the right wing is engraved with the size of the nappy.

Snapped into the shell is a booster made of super absorbent thick bamboo/cotton fleece (400-420gsm), which when doubled under provides 6 layers of thirsty bamboo. The booster is topped with micrchamois, microfleece or suedecloth, and features a circle patch of fabric matched to the cotton outer - this helps to know which booster goes with which nappy when you are snapping after the wash (and also looks cute)!

Bamboo is an amazing material. It is absorbent, breathable and odour resistant. It is also naturally antibacterial, antifungal and hypoallergenic, and especially gentle on sensitive skin. Bamboo is also one of the most sustainable crops, as it is fast growing, uses less water than other crops, is organically grown, and requires no pesticides. There is heaps of info on the net about the wondrous properties of bamboo, check it out!

Sizing

Following is the approximate size range for mangolime nappies. Note that the waist and rise measurements are more important than the weight measurements to work out the best size for your baby. Rise is the measurement from your baby's front waist through the middle of their legs and back up to their waistline in the back. If the nappy is gaping at the legs, this could mean your baby is too small for the size range and you will get leakage

Size Weight Waist Rise
Small 4.5-7kg (10-16lbs) 35-45cm (14-17.5 in) 40cm (16 inches)
Medium 6- 11kg (15- 25lbs) 45 ' 55 cm (18- 21.5in) 43cm (17 inches)
Large 10- 16kg (22' 35lbs) 48 ' 62 cm (19- 24.5in) 45 cm (18 inches)

How to use a mangolime nappy

When you receive your mangolime nappy, you may wish to pre-wash it before using, as bamboo reaches maximum absorbency after a few washes.

mangolime nappies are what's known as All-in-Two nappies (or AI2s).

To prepare the nappy for use just snap in the booster, fold it under and you are ready to go! They are pretty much the same shape as a disposable, and as easy to use. Just lay the nappy down flat, lay your baby on top, and do up the two snaps on each side. You can adjust the snaps to fit your baby's waist and thigh measurements, which is especially useful for babies with skinny tums and chubby thighs, or vice versa.

Depending on your baby's personal weeing power, a mangolime nappy will last between 2-4 hours. It is best to change nappies frequently though, for your baby's comfort and hygiene.

Please note that mangolime nappies are for day use only. They are not recommended for night use as they aren't designed to last that long.

Caring for your mangolime nappies

The best thing about modern cloth nappies (besides how gorgeous they look and how effective they are) is how easy they are to care for. No need for bleaching, soaking, ironing or hot washing. No need to buy extra expensive soaking powders. Your mother (and grandmother) will marvel at how much simpler things are!

When you take the dirty nappy off your baby, just rinse off any solids into the toilet (a Little Squirter is great for this), and then put the rinsed dirty nappy in a dry nappy bucket with a lid, or a wetbag if you are out and about. This is called "dry pailing". You can dry pail nappies for up to 48 hours before washing.

*Please don't soak or bleach your nappies. It will reduce their lifespan, damage the materials, and may also irritate sensitive skin.

We recommend washing in cold water with a small amount of your regular laundry detergent (about a third of what you would normally use). Using too much detergent will cause a build up over time, and will reduce the absorbency of your nappies. Don't use fabric softeners or soap flakes (or detergent that contains softeners), these will make your nappy less absorbent as they build up over time forming a coating on the nappy.

Wash your nappies in cold water. Cold water is preferred as hot water may damage your nappy. You may wish to do a rinse cycle first. Line dry your nappy in the sun. This will kill any germs and will also remove stains as if by magic! We recommend line drying over tumble drying, as tumble drying will reduce the lifespan of your nappy. If possible, dry with the fabric print outer out of the direct sun to minimise fading. Make sure your nappies are fully dry before using (sometimes it can be hard to tell because they stay dry inner is so effective!). It is best to dry your nappies flat, rather than hanging them as this stretches the elastic.
